A mother, Corey Widen, has been paid a visit by police and has an investigation against her by the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) after her daughter was seen walking their dog around the block alone.

The family’s Maltese puppy, named Marshmallow, was adopted into their family last year, and the household rule was that everyone take a turn walking the pooch. Widen’s daughter, Dorothy, who is 8 years old and home-schooled, was visible to her mom through looking out the window during the walk. The walk is apparently the only time  that the 8 year old child isn’t directly supervised, according to the Chicago Tribune.

An anonymous person called police after seeing Dorothy walking the dog alone. The police didn’t file charges but DCFS investigated whether or not Widen was a neglectful parent.

“Apparently whoever called the police didn’t think the police were a good enough judge of what was okay and not okay. Then they called DCFS. The police did not call DCFS,” Widen told WBBM.

The caller had also stated to the police that they had called them in the past to report the girl playing in a parking lot, according to Alissandra Calderon, the communications director for DCFS, in a news statement to ABC News. The call had stated that the child was an unattended “5-year old”.

“When I found out what the call was about, I just couldn’t believe it,” Widen told “Good Morning America. “Don’t judge a book by its cover. You don’t know every situation. You don’t know every child and when you do things like this, you overwhelm an already overwhelmed system with nuisance calls like this. And kids and families who need help don’t get it then.”

The investigation by DCFS found the call to be “unfounded”.
